A Mobile WiMAX 802.16e network is being deployed in Pakistan by the country’s largest cellular operator, Mobilink. Motorola, the technology provider, is planning, designing, deploying, and optimizing the network, and will also be providing support and integration services as well as indoor/outdoor CPEs. The network will be extended to Pakistan’s metropolitan areas including Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. Mobilink, which is currently providing cellular and data services, will now be able to expand its offerings to include VoIP and cater to customer and enterprise needs. Essentially, the new network would enable the largest cellular network to provide broadband access to areas, lacking connectivity.

Saudi Arabia's third mobile license has been issued to Kuwait's MTC-led consortium for a price tag of US$6.1 billion.

The UAE’s Etisalat intends to secure a mobile services license in Sudan to complement its existing fixed-line operations in the North African country.

A new PSTN service has been launched in Bangladesh’s Dhaka region, breaking the fixed-line monopoly of Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB).

Seven telecom consortia are now in the final line to win Qatar's second mobile concession. Originally, twelve players were shor-listed.

Lebanon’s newly formed regulator, Telecoms Regulatory Authority, has been set up and will become fully operational in April 2007.
